Company History


For 100 years now, Hobart Corporation has been the world's leading supplier of food equipment and service for the foodservice and food retail industries.

Hobart manufactures products for baking, cooking, food preparation, refrigeration, warewashing, and weighing and wrapping. Key products include mixers, slicers, scales, wrapping equipment, refrigeration, ovens and warewashing equipment.

The Hobart Corporation USA began with the idea to put an electric motor on a coffee grinder. 

On July 20 1897 Mr CC Hobart & Herbert L. Johnson formed the Hobart Electrical Manufacturing Company in Troy, Ohio USA.

1915

Hobart continues its growth into the World market, opening a sales office in Australia.

1934

The Hobart Corporation USA expands acquiring the Dayton Scale Division of International Business Machines (IBM).

1951

Hobart Australia acquires a much larger manufacturing facility at Mortlake Sydney and commences local manufacturing of mixers & potato peelers. In the 1970's this facility was extended to allow for the manufacturing of dishwashers making it the largest factory of its kind in Australia.

1984

As a result of an international restructure The Hobart Manufacturing Company Pty Limited, then a wholly owned subsidiary of The Hobart Corporation USA, was sold to a distributor.

1994

Hobart Corporation USA reacquires the Hobart Australia operation from the distributor. The operation now consists of a sales & service company, Hobart Food Equipment Pty Limited.

1997

Hobart celebrates 100 years of supplying quality equipment & after sales service to the catering industry.

1999

Premark International Inc. is acquired by the Illinois Tool Works Inc (ITW).

Hobart is part of ITW. ITW recently purchased PMI, which was formed in the fall of 1986 in a spin-off from Dart & Kraft, Inc. ITW's (Parent Company) business segments include a consumer products group, which includes West Bend and Precor; a decorative products group, which includes Wilsonart and Florida Tile; and PMI Food Equipment Group, which includes Hobart, Vulcan-Hart. Wolf. Adamatic. Foster, Stero, Tasselli, Baxter, Still, Traulsen, Somat, Wittco, Ungerman, and Inoxyform.

In all, ITW employ 48,000 world-wide. ITW sales were $8.3 billion. Approximately 30% of the company's sales are generated outside the U.S.
